Ask what web hosting costs and you get a monthly figure that is true for about a year. The useful number is the three-year total, because that is roughly how long a site lives before anyone thinks about moving it.
We built that number for seven ways of buying hosting, using renewal rates each host publishes. The result was not what we expected. The single largest variable is not which host you pick. It is which term you pick from the same host.
How Much Does Web Hosting Cost Over Three Years?
Between $107 and $1,260, depending on the plan and the term. On shared hosting the realistic range is $143 to $468 — and the top and bottom of that range can be the same plan at the same host, bought on different commitments.

Every line is the advertised rate for the promotional term, then the published renewal rate for whatever months remain inside the 36-month window. The widest gap in the table runs to twelve times. Nothing is estimated. The arithmetic is simple enough to check, and we would rather you checked it.
The Renewal Never Arrives If the Term Is Long Enough
This is the part that inverts the usual advice.
The Starter plan at Bluehost, a Newfold Digital brand, costs $143.64 over three years on a 36-month term — and the renewal never applies, because the introductory term and the measurement window are the same length. The same plan on a 12-month term costs $335.64, because 24 of those months are billed at $11.99. Choosing the term itself is covered in annual or three-year terms.
Same host, same plan, same server. A difference of $192, decided entirely at checkout.
Hostinger runs the pattern further, and one host stretches it to a full three years. Its introductory rate holds for 48 months, so a three-year window sits entirely inside the promotional term: $107.64, the cheapest line in the table, with no renewal in sight.

What That Actually Costs You
Nothing here is free, and the price is paid in a currency the pricing page does not mention.
Hostinger asks $143.52 upfront for 48 months. Bluehost asks $143.64 upfront for 36. Two storefronts that look nothing alike want almost exactly the same amount of money on day one. What differs is how long you are committed afterwards.
Prepaying converts a monthly bill into a bet on staying. If the host disappoints in month eight, the money is spent and the refund window closed six months earlier. The 36-month price is not a discount. It is compensation for taking that risk, and whether the compensation is adequate depends on how confident you are.
⚠️ Refund windows do not scale with the term. Thirty days is thirty days whether you prepaid one year or four.
The Cheap Plan and the Expensive One Get Closer Than You Think
Rank the table and something odd appears in the middle.
SiteGround’s entry plan bought on a 12-month term costs $467.64 over three years. Cloudways, which is managed cloud hosting with no promotional pricing at all, costs $504.00 for the same period.
That is a gap of $36 across three years — about a dollar a month — between a budget shared plan and a managed cloud server. The shared plan is cheaper. It is not cheaper by an amount that should decide anything, and by year four it is not cheaper at all.
What the Totals Leave Out
Three things sit outside every figure above, and all three are real.
The domain from year two. Free for the first year almost everywhere, then billed at the registrar’s rate. Published figures run roughly $15 to $20 a year, and we could not find a first-party page at either host stating it plainly, so we are not adding a number we cannot source.
Add-ons that renew on their own schedule. Security, backups and premium certificates are separate purchases with separate renewal rates — we priced those separately.
Tax at checkout, which varies by country and is applied to the full prepayment rather than a monthly amount.
None of these change the ranking. All of them raise the totals.

How to Work Out Your Own Number
Four steps, five minutes, no account needed.
Write down the promotional rate and the length of the term it covers. The length is the part that gets skipped.
Find the renewal rate for that same term. Not the plan’s renewal rate — the one attached to your commitment length, because they differ.
Multiply the promotional rate by its months, cap the result at 36, then fill the remainder at the renewal rate. If the promotional term is 36 months or longer, you are done at step three.
Add the domain from year two, and any add-on you genuinely intend to keep.
The figure you end up with is the one worth comparing. A monthly price is a comparison between storefronts. A three-year total is a comparison between hosts.
How We Research
The Bluehost rates were read from that company’s own renewal pricing table on 31 August 2026. SiteGround and Hostinger rates come from independent write-ups that agree with each other and with our own August check of the vendor pages. Cloudways’ entry figure comes from its own pricing page. Every total above is arithmetic on those published rates, shown in full so it can be checked.
We run no tests of our own. Our method and the criteria behind every score are on our About page.
Frequently Asked Questions
On shared hosting, roughly $48 to $156 in the promotional year and $120 to $216 a year afterwards, depending on host and term. Managed hosting runs higher but does not increase: Cloudways from $168 a year, Kinsta from $420.
Financially, usually yes: it lowers the rate and can push the renewal outside your planning window entirely. The cost is flexibility. Refund windows stay at 30 days no matter how long you prepay, so the commitment is real.
Between $107 and $1,260 across the plans compared here. On shared hosting the realistic band is $143 to $468, and the position within that band is decided mostly by the term you commit to rather than the host you choose.
Less than the storefronts suggest. A budget shared plan bought annually reaches $467.64 over three years against $504.00 for entry-level managed cloud — about a dollar a month apart, with no renewal increase on the managed side.
Introductory rates apply to new customers on the first term only. If your term is 12 months, months 13 onward bill at the renewal rate. If your term is 36 or 48 months, the renewal does not arrive until after the three-year mark.
The Verdict
The term moves the total more than the host does. The same Bluehost plan costs $143.64 or $335.64 over three years, and nothing about the service differs between those two numbers.
If you are confident, prepay the long term and the renewal never reaches you. If you are not confident, price the twelve-month path honestly, because that is the one you will actually be on.
And check the middle of the table before assuming budget hosting is the economical choice. Over three years a promotional shared plan on an annual term lands within about a dollar a month of managed cloud hosting that never increases at all.
