Kinsta vs Hostwinds (2026): A Record Against a Promise

Kinsta vs Hostwinds sets a measured record against an unverified claim. Kinsta costs $1,260.00 across 36 months and has a load result, a benchmark score and a published price. Hostwinds costs $222.24 over the same stretch and has no independent measurement in our tables. Its 99.9999% uptime is the company’s own claim, and even its refund window is disputed between sources. So this is not a comparison of two records. It is a comparison of a record with a promise.

Kinsta vs Hostwinds: The Short Answer

Kinsta, at 4.1 against 3.4 in our reviews, for anything that earns. It answered every request in the benchmark load test, includes monitoring and daily backups, and charges one published price. Hostwinds is a fifth of the cost, has strong support reviews and its own data centers, and asks you to take its performance on trust.

A Record Against a Promise

We run no tests, so the Kinsta figures belong to Hostingstep. It finished the load test at 40 ms with every request answered, and scores 8.8 of 10 on that project’s WordPress benchmark. Those numbers come with a window and a method.

For Hostwinds we found no independent measurement at all. The 99.9999% figure on its site is its own claim, and it is an unusual one. Six nines allows about 32 seconds of downtime across a whole year, stricter than the contractual promises large cloud providers make.

⚠️ That does not mean Hostwinds is slow or unreliable. It means nobody outside the company has published a figure either way, so the claim cannot be checked. Our guide to reading an uptime report explains why an unverifiable number is weaker evidence than a modest measured one.

The Refund Window Is Disputed Too

One source describes a 30-day money-back guarantee at Hostwinds, and two others describe three days. That is a wide gap on a term that decides how much a mistake costs, and the company has not settled it publicly in anything we read.

Kinsta refunds within 30 days, excluding domains, and bills monthly, so the sum at risk is one month. Before paying Hostwinds for a year, ask support to confirm the window in writing and keep the reply. Our guide to canceling hosting and getting a refund covers what comes back and what does not.

What is measured, what is claimed and what is disputed between the two hosts

What Hostwinds Has Going for It

Support reviews. An aggregate of more than four hundred business reviews puts it at 4.9 of 5. Chat and tickets are answered in house, around the clock. No controlled test of hosting support exists in the sources we found, so that is reputation rather than measurement, but it is a large sample.

Independence. Founded in 2010 and still independent, based in Seattle, with its own data centers. That is rare at this price. It matters to anyone who has watched a host change hands, which our page on who owns Bluehost, a Newfold Digital brand, traces across the field.

Price and email. $4.54 rising to $6.99 is a gentle step, and cPanel includes email, which Kinsta does not host at all.

Servers and reseller plans. You can change product without changing company, and its white-label reseller plan at $10.00 includes WHMCS, which our roundup of reseller hosting covers.

What the Kinsta Price Buys

A figure you can check. The load result is the difference that matters here, because it covers the pages a cache cannot serve.

Performance monitoring in the plan. The tool that finds a slow query instead of leaving you to guess, as our guide to testing your site speed properly explains.

A container per site. Isolation from other customers, which shared hosting does not promise.

An edge network and daily backups. Cloudflare Enterprise in front of every site, with daily copies included.

The Five-Year View

Neither price hides a surprise after the promotion. Kinsta stays at $35.00 and Hostwinds at $6.99, so the ratio holds: roughly five to one, year after year. Add a separate email provider on the Kinsta side and it widens a little more.

For a site that earns nothing, that ratio is the whole argument. For a site that earns, the question is whether a checkable load result and monitoring are worth the other four fifths, and our guide to reducing TTFB covers what you would otherwise be diagnosing by hand.

Which Site Belongs Where

A store, a membership site or anything with logins. Kinsta, because those pages bypass the cache and only Kinsta has a load result. Our list of hosting for ecommerce covers that case.

A brochure site, a blog or a hobby project. Hostwinds, at a fifth of the price, where an unverified claim costs you little if it turns out to be optimistic.

A freelancer hosting client sites. Hostwinds, for the reseller plan with WHMCS included.

A site that is slow and nobody knows why. Kinsta, for the monitoring in the plan.

How to Test a Host That Has No Figures

Buy a month, install a copy of the site, and measure it yourself. Run the same checks from a location near your visitors and at your busiest hour, and record the medians with dates.

Then look at the error rate rather than the average, because a plan that answers slowly is better than one that drops requests. Our guide to handling a traffic spike covers the etiquette of load testing, which needs the host’s permission on a shared plan.

Why the Gap Matters More on Some Sites

For a brochure site, an unverified uptime claim costs little: if the host is offline for an afternoon, nobody notices and nothing is lost. The price gap is then the whole argument, and it runs five to one in favor of Hostwinds.

For a store or a booking page, the same uncertainty is the product. You would be choosing infrastructure for a business on a number the business cannot check. Our roundup of hosting for high traffic ranks hosts by that test, and our list of hosting for small business covers cheaper hosts that do have figures.

Commitment and Leaving

Hostwinds bills monthly as well as annually, so a trial month is possible, and that is the sensible way to buy a host with no published measurements. Kinsta bills monthly at a flat rate.

Leaving is easier from Hostwinds, because a cPanel account exports in a standard format that another cPanel host can import. Kinsta runs its own dashboard, so moving away means moving the site. Our guide to migrating web hosting covers both routes.

Where Each One Is Weakest

Hostwinds is weakest on evidence, and broadly so. There is no independent load or uptime figure, its uptime claim is unverified, and sources describe its refund window two ways. Its support reputation is the counterweight.

Kinsta is weakest on price, scope and its own gap. It costs 5.7 times as much over 36 months, hosts WordPress only, includes no email, has no phone line, and no named project publishes its uptime either. Our Kinsta review prices the tiers.

How We Research

We run no tests. Kinsta figures come from Hostingstep’s 2026 benchmarks with their windows. For Hostwinds we found no independent measurement. Our table records that rather than repeating the company’s own uptime claim as a result. The support rating is an aggregate of more than four hundred business reviews from 2026.

Prices come from the providers’ own pages, read on 20 September 2026, and the refund window is recorded as disputed because sources disagree. The criteria behind our scores are on our about page, and our comparison of Cloudways against Hostwinds sets the same host beside a cloud server.

Kinsta vs Hostwinds FAQ

Which is cheaper, Kinsta or Hostwinds?

Hostwinds, by a wide margin: $222.24 across 36 months against $1,260.00 at Kinsta. Its renewal of $6.99 is a step of 1.5× over 12 months, one of the gentler ones we price.

Is Hostwinds really 99.9999% reliable?

That is the company’s own claim and nobody outside it has published a figure either way. Six nines allows about 32 seconds of downtime a year, which is stricter than the promises large cloud providers make contractually.

What is the Hostwinds refund window?

Sources disagree: one describes 30 days and two describe three days. Ask support to confirm it in writing before paying, and keep the reply.

Which one performs better?

Only Kinsta has a measurement: 40 ms with every request answered in the 2026 load test, and 8.8 of 10 on that project’s WordPress benchmark. Hostwinds has no independent figure in our tables.

Does either include email?

Hostwinds does, through cPanel. Kinsta hosts no email at all, so a business on Kinsta needs a separate provider and another monthly bill.

The Verdict

Kinsta takes this, at 4.1 against 3.4, because a checkable figure beats an unverifiable claim when a site earns money. It answered every request under load, its benchmark score is published, and its price does not move.

Hostwinds is the cheaper host by a wide margin, with a strong support reputation, its own data centers and independence since 2010. For a small site that is a reasonable trade, as long as you buy a month first, measure it yourself and get the refund window in writing. Our page on what web hosting costs runs both totals further.
