SiteGround vs GoDaddy (2026): An SSL Charge Decides It

Disclosure: WebFin is reader-supported. If you buy hosting through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions vary between providers and our ratings do not — here’s our full disclosure.

GoDaddy Economy costs $215.64 across three years. SiteGround StartUp on its 24-month term costs $251.64.

So GoDaddy is cheaper by $36.00. Then its SSL charge arrives in year two and the order reverses.

The Charge That Flips It

GoDaddy includes SSL on Economy for the first year. After that it charges $119.99 a year, and its other tiers include the certificate for the life of the plan.

Across years two and three that adds $239.98. The Economy total becomes $455.62.

Our Hidden Costs table lists no equivalent charge for SiteGround. That is an absence of a row rather than a confirmation, so ask before you buy.

The Short Answer

SiteGround on the 24-month term, once the certificate is counted. It costs $251.64 against $455.62, a difference of $203.98.

However, take SiteGround’s 12-month term instead and GoDaddy is cheaper again. That total reaches $467.64.

Two Terms, Two Different Answers

SiteGround sells StartUp on a 12-month and a 24-month term. Both advertise $2.99, and the renewal differs.

The 24-month term renews at $14.99 and the 12-month term at $17.99. Across three years that gap reaches $216.00.

Therefore the term you pick at checkout moves your bill more than the company you pick. That is unusual, and the term matters as much as the multiplier.

What each host charges once the introductory term ends, with the term the multiplier is calculated over — a 6× increase over 12 months and a 2.5× increase over 36 months are not comparable. Bluehost figures read from its own help page; the rest from agreeing independent sources pending a first-party check. Checked 31 August 2026.

SiteGround multiplies by 6.0 over 12 months. GoDaddy multiplies by 2.6 over 36 months, which is milder and arrives later.

What Our Own Tables Hold

This section is uncomfortable, so we will state it plainly. We score SiteGround 3.9 and GoDaddy 2.7.

Yet five of our nine tables carry no SiteGround row at all: response times, hidden charges, refund windows, ownership and plan limits.

GoDaddy appears in all five. Its shared plan measures 751 milliseconds, its uptime 99.76 percent, and its load test did not complete. The same GoDaddy figures against a Cloudways server are in our Cloudways and GoDaddy comparison.

In other words, the host we rank lower is the one we have measured. That is an absence of data rather than a poor result, and it belongs on the page.

Two panels showing which measurements our tables hold for each host

Where GoDaddy Has Been Measured

Its shared plan recorded 751 milliseconds and 99.76 percent uptime between November 2025 and June 2026.

More telling is what could not be measured. Its load test did not complete at all.

Its Managed WordPress line is a separate product recording 344 milliseconds, with a hardware score of 3.8 out of 10. That line is not what Economy sells you. The same GoDaddy figures against Kinsta are in our Kinsta and GoDaddy comparison.

Ask what SSL costs on Economy from year two

Support Decides Nothing Here

Both hosts answer a telephone around the clock. GoDaddy does so in more countries than most.

Neither figure is a measurement. Our Support table names channels, and says plainly that no timed response exists for either.

So the category that decided our HostGator comparison is a draw in this one. HostGator has belonged to Newfold Digital since 2021.

Two Decisions Decide This

Which SiteGround term you buy. The 24-month term costs $251.64 and the 12-month term $467.64, for the same plan.

Whether you need SSL on GoDaddy Economy. A free certificate from a public authority works, and the host charges $119.99 a year for its own.

Answer both and the comparison resolves. Answer neither and any total you read is a guess — we set out the certificate question separately.

Four numbered points setting out what actually decides this comparison

What Else Sits Outside the Price

One published review counted $345.39 a year in pre-checked extras at GoDaddy checkout. We could not verify that figure and report it as their count.

Our Hidden Costs table lists the SSL charge and that count, and nothing for SiteGround. Again, absence rather than confirmation.

How We Research

Every figure here comes from our own tables, each row naming the source that published it, checked on 12 September 2026. Four figures are arithmetic on those rows: $239.98 is twice $119.99, $455.62 adds it to $215.64, $203.98 is the gap to $251.64, and $216.00 is the gap between SiteGround’s two terms.

Where a table holds no row for a host, we say so rather than filling the gap. We run no tests of our own. Our criteria are on our About page.

SiteGround vs GoDaddy FAQ

Which is cheaper, SiteGround or GoDaddy?

It depends on two choices. GoDaddy Economy costs $215.64 across three years before SSL. Add the $119.99 annual charge from year two and it reaches $455.62, against $251.64 for SiteGround on its 24-month term.

Why does SiteGround have two different three-year totals?

Because it sells StartUp on two terms. The 24-month term renews at $14.99 and costs $251.64 over 36 months. The 12-month term renews at $17.99 and costs $467.64.

Does GoDaddy charge for SSL?

On Economy, yes, from year two at $119.99 annually. Its other tiers include the certificate for the life of the plan, so the charge falls on the cheapest plan only.

Which host has better measured performance?

Only GoDaddy has been measured in our tables. Its shared plan recorded 751 milliseconds and 99.76 percent uptime, and its load test did not complete. No response or uptime figure for SiteGround appears anywhere in our tables.

Which one has better support?

Neither by any measurement. Both answer a telephone around the clock and GoDaddy does so in more countries. Our Support table records channels only, because no timed response figure exists for either host.

The Verdict

SiteGround on the 24-month term, by $203.98 once the certificate is counted. On the 12-month term the answer reverses.

In short, this comparison is decided by a contract length and a line item, not by which company is better. Both answer the phone, and only one has been measured.

That last point is ours to fix rather than theirs. We rank SiteGround higher on criteria our own tables do not yet cover.
