The main thing a managed server sells is a shell with Composer, and Joomla does not need one. Extensions install from its administrator, its file tree is modest and its memory needs are small. So the verdict here runs the other way from our pages on Cloudways for Drupal and Cloudways for Magento.
This is more product than a normal Joomla site requires, and three specific cases are the exception.
Is Cloudways Right for Joomla? The Short Answer
Only if extensions have turned the site into an application, if traffic arrives in bursts, or if you are running several sites. For an ordinary brochure, association or publication site, a shared plan with a clean load result costs a fraction of $14.00 a month. If you do buy here, size above the entry configuration.
Why the Server’s Main Advantage Does Not Apply
No Composer requirement. Joomla updates core and extensions as packages through its own interface, so SSH is a convenience rather than a condition.
No dependency tree. File counts stay modest, which is what made the published inode limits comfortable on our page for Bluehost and Joomla.
No search service. Joomla search works without a separate engine.
Modest memory. Megabytes rather than the gigabytes a Magento compile demands.

The Three Cases Where It Does Fit
Extensions built an application. A forum component, a shop, a booking system or a members area all build pages per visitor, and nothing caches them. That is the workload a sized server answers, as our list of hosting for forums covers.
Traffic arrives in bursts. Hourly billing means a campaign week costs the hours it ran, with no visit allowance to exceed.
Several sites, one bill. No per-site pricing, so a handful of Joomla sites share a server, which our list of hosting for multiple sites covers.
⚠️ Notice that none of these is a Joomla requirement. They are traffic and workload reasons, which is the honest way to justify a server.
If You Buy Here, Do Not Buy the Entry Size
The benchmark figure in our tables belongs to the entry Vultr High Frequency configuration. It recorded 288 ms under load with a 1.7% error rate, and a WordPress score of 7.6 of 10.
Its uptime range is strong: 99.996% to 99.999% across five plans.
For a Joomla site whose pages are cached, that load figure barely matters. For one whose extensions build pages per visitor, it is the measurement that decides the busy evening. Size above the entry tier, and use hourly billing to test two sizes.

What Is Missing Here for a Joomla Site
No email. Institutional Joomla sites send notifications and host staff addresses, and mailboxes are elsewhere. Our guide to setting up email on your domain covers the arrangement.
No bundled content network. Joomla’s cached pages copy to an edge network well, and our page on content delivery networks shows what that is worth for distant readers.
No cPanel. Joomla tutorials generally describe cPanel screens, so following them means translating as you go.
Phone support costs extra. Chat and tickets are included around the clock.
The Cheaper Comparisons
InterServer. $2.50 a month locked for the life of the account, standard cPanel, phone support included. Its measured record is thinner: no named load result, and an uptime figure from one reviewer monitoring six sites.
Bluehost. Load 41 ms with a 0% error rate, hardware 9.6 of 10 and 224 ms cached delivery across 40 locations, on cPanel. It holds $3.99 for 36 months, and is a Newfold Digital brand.
SiteGround. A load test at 170 ms with no errors, staging on GrowBig and phone support, against 632 ms globally. Our page on SiteGround for Joomla works through it.
Which Joomla Sites Fit
A Joomla site with a busy forum. The clearest case for a sized server.
A Joomla shop with real volume. A checkout is never cached, and our list of hosting for ecommerce ranks hosts by that test.
An agency running several Joomla sites. One server, sized once.
A site with a release process. Staging and Git on every tier make deployments repeatable, which our guide to setting up a staging site covers.
Which Should Not Bother
A brochure or association site. Shared hosting with a clean load result, caching switched on, and the money saved.
A first Joomla site. cPanel and a phone line are worth more than a server while you are learning the platform.
A site that needs mailboxes with the hosting. There are none here.
Anyone unwilling to size a server. The entry configuration is a decision, not a default, which our page on shared against VPS hosting explains.

How We Research
We run no tests. The load result, WordPress score and uptime range come from Hostingstep. The load and score are from its Cloudways review of 2026, and the uptime range from its October 2025 to May 2026 window. Comparison figures for other hosts come from the same project.
Prices, billing terms, inclusions and support channels come from the providers’ own pages, read on 20 September 2026, and sit in our tables. Joomla’s requirements come from its own documentation for current releases, and individual extensions are outside what we review. The criteria are on our about page, and the full workings are in our Cloudways review.
Cloudways for Joomla FAQ
Rarely. Joomla installs extensions from its administrator, keeps a modest file tree and needs no search service. The shell that justifies a server for Drupal or Magento is a convenience here.
When extensions have made the site an application, when traffic arrives in bursts, or when you run several sites. Those are workload reasons rather than Joomla requirements.
Above the entry configuration if your pages are uncached. That plan recorded 288 ms under load with a 1.7% error rate, and hourly billing makes testing a larger size cheap.
Mailboxes, a bundled content network, cPanel and included phone support. For an institutional site the missing email is the one that tends to matter.
A shared plan with a clean load result. InterServer holds $2.50 a month locked with cPanel, and Bluehost records 41 ms under load with 224 ms cached delivery across 40 locations.
The Verdict
This is the one page in the Cloudways series where our answer is mostly no. The reason is a compliment to Joomla rather than a complaint about the host. A platform that installs extensions from its own interface does not need the shell you are paying for.
Buy it when the extensions have changed the workload, when campaigns drive the traffic, or when several sites share the bill. Otherwise take a cheap plan with a measured load result, turn on Joomla’s cache, and add a network if readers are distant. Our page on what web hosting costs prices the alternatives across three years.
