Kinsta vs HostGator is the widest price gap in this series. Kinsta Starter costs $1,260.00 across 36 months at a flat $35.00. HostGator Hatchling costs $135.00 over the same stretch, which makes Kinsta 9.3 times the price over 36 months. Add HostGator’s daily backups and the ratio falls to about five. What the money buys is harder to summarize than usual, because the published figures for these two hosts do not line up neatly, and this page says which ones compare and which do not. For the same host against SiteGround, see SiteGround vs HostGator.
Kinsta vs HostGator: The Short Answer
Kinsta, at 4.1 against 3.2 in our reviews, for a WordPress site that earns: it answered every request in the load test, isolates each site in its own container, and includes performance monitoring and an edge network. HostGator is the cheapest three years here, with phone support and a 45-day refund window, and its uptime record is the weak point at 99.68%.

Nine Times the Price, or Five
HostGator Hatchling bills 36 months at $3.75 and renews at $10.99, which is 2.9× over 36 months. Three years come to $135.00. Kinsta charges $35.00 a month from the first month with no promotional term, which is $1,260.00.
The honest ratio depends on what you add. HostGator describes its weekly backups as a courtesy rather than a guarantee and sells daily CodeGuard copies at $35.88 a year. Count those across three years and HostGator reaches $242.64, which puts Kinsta at about five times the price rather than nine. Our page on hidden hosting fees lists its other extras, including SiteLock pre-selected in the cart at $23.88.
⚠️ Kinsta has its own ceiling. Starter includes 25,000 monthly visits and one site, so a busy site moves up a tier and the bill rises with it. HostGator publishes no visit cap, which means the limit is whatever the shared account can serve.

What Compares, and What Does Not
We run no tests, so these figures belong to Hostingstep. Three of them line up and three do not, and the difference matters more here than in most comparisons.
Comparable: first-byte time. Kinsta records 525 ms at the origin and HostGator 1.23 seconds globally. Those are measured differently, but the gap is wide enough to mean something.
Not comparable: the load tests. Kinsta answered every request at 40 ms with 100 concurrent visitors. HostGator’s review reports 762 ms at 500 concurrent visitors. Different concurrency, different test, no ranking from us.
Half comparable: uptime. HostGator recorded 99.68%, about 28 hours of downtime a year. Our table holds no uptime percentage for Kinsta from a named project, so we do not claim one. Our guide to reading an uptime report explains why we leave that blank rather than filling it.

HostGator Is Improving on One Measure
The same project’s September 2026 update puts HostGator’s hardware joint highest in its field after Newfold moved it onto Oracle Cloud. Its sister brand Bluehost improved sharply in the same move, passing the load test at 41 ms without an error.
So HostGator’s newest figure is better than its older ones, and its uptime record of 99.68% predates the move. A buyer choosing today should weigh the uptime that has been counted, and a buyer who can wait a few months will see whether the uptime follows the hardware. Our comparison of Bluehost against HostGator covers both Newfold brands side by side.
What the Kinsta Price Includes
A container per site. Another customer’s traffic cannot reach yours, which on shared hosting is never guaranteed.
Performance monitoring. Kinsta includes application performance monitoring, which finds the slow plugin query instead of leaving you to guess.
An edge network and daily backups. Cloudflare Enterprise sits in front of every site, and daily copies are part of the plan rather than an add-on.
Staging and development tools. Useful for a site that changes, and covered in our guide to setting up a staging site.
What HostGator Includes That Kinsta Does Not
HostGator runs cPanel, so email lives in the account and every tutorial matches the screen. Kinsta hosts no email at all, which means a separate provider and a separate bill for any business that runs on its inbox. Our guide to setting up email on your domain covers the records.
It also answers the phone around the clock and refunds for 45 days, six weeks rather than four. Kinsta answers chat and tickets and has no telephone line. For a non-technical owner those two differences can outweigh a benchmark.
Which Site Belongs Where
A store, a membership site or a business site on WordPress. Kinsta, because the pages that matter are uncached and it answered every request under load.
A personal site or a hobby project. HostGator, at a ninth of the price, where a day of downtime spread across a year costs nothing.
An agency handing sites to clients. Kinsta, for isolation and monitoring, as our list of hosting for agencies explains.
A business that runs on email and wants a phone line. HostGator, or another shared host with cPanel. Our list of hosting for local business covers that case.
Which Result Matters for Your Site
For a brochure site or a blog behind a page cache, most visitors receive a stored copy. The first-byte gap is felt on the first visit of the day and rarely after that, and the price gap is the number that decides.
For a store or a membership site, carts and logins bypass the cache and reach the server on every click. There the managed platform earns its price, and 99.68% uptime means the site is away for about a day a year at times nobody chooses. Our list of hosting for ecommerce covers that case.
The Five-Year View
Neither price hides a surprise after the first term. Kinsta stays at $35.00, and HostGator renews at $10.99 plus whatever extras you keep. So the monthly gap settles at about twenty-four dollars, and five years leaves HostGator well under half of the Kinsta total even with daily backups added.
Growing Past the Entry Plan
Kinsta Starter covers one site and 25,000 monthly visits, so a growing site moves up a tier rather than resizing in place. HostGator Hatchling covers one domain, and its higher shared tiers lift that, though shared resources stay shared.
Either way, a site that grows past its plan will pay more. The difference is that Kinsta’s next step is priced per site, while HostGator’s next step is another shared tier. Our list of hosting for multiple sites compares those shapes.
Commitment and Leaving
HostGator’s lowest rate asks for 36 months up front, and its 45-day window covers the start of that term. Kinsta bills monthly with a 30-day window, so the sum at risk is one month rather than three years.
Leaving is easier from HostGator, because a cPanel account exports in a standard format. Kinsta runs its own dashboard, so moving away means moving the site rather than the account. Our guide to migrating web hosting covers both.
Who Owns Them
HostGator has belonged to Newfold Digital since 2021, alongside Bluehost and Yoast SEO, and who owns Bluehost traces that group. Kinsta’s ownership is not established in the sources we read, which is a gap rather than an implication.
For a buyer the practical difference is the shape of the offer. Newfold sells shared plans with extras alongside them, and the cart reflects that. Kinsta sells one product at one price with the extras folded in.
Where Each One Is Weakest
HostGator is weakest on uptime and first-byte time: 99.68% and 1.23 seconds are the numbers that separate it from a managed platform, and its backups and security are sold separately.
Kinsta is weakest on price, scope and evidence gaps. It is nine times the HostGator total before add-ons, hosts WordPress only, includes no email, has no phone line, and our table holds no uptime percentage for it. Our Kinsta review prices the tiers.

How We Research
We run no tests. Load, uptime, response and hardware figures come from Hostingstep’s 2026 benchmarks, reviews and its September update, each with its window. Where two tests used different concurrency we say so and do not rank them, and where our table holds no figure we leave the cell empty.
Prices, backup terms and refund windows come from the providers’ own pages, read on 20 September 2026. The criteria behind our scores are on our about page, and the full workings are in our HostGator review.
Kinsta vs HostGator FAQ
HostGator, by a wide margin: $135.00 across 36 months against $1,260.00 at Kinsta. Add HostGator’s daily backups at $35.88 a year and it reaches $242.64, which makes Kinsta about five times the price rather than nine.
Kinsta on the comparable figure: 525 ms at the origin against 1.23 seconds globally for HostGator. Their load tests used different concurrency, 100 visitors against 500, so we do not rank those against each other.
It recorded 99.68% uptime in the project we cite, about 28 hours of downtime a year. Our table holds no uptime percentage for Kinsta from a named project, so a direct comparison is not possible.
HostGator does, through cPanel. Kinsta hosts no email, so a business that runs on its inbox needs a separate provider and a separate bill.
On one measure. The September 2026 update puts its hardware joint highest in its field after Newfold moved it onto Oracle Cloud. Its uptime record of 99.68% predates that move, so the next window is the one to watch.
The Verdict
Kinsta takes this, at 4.1 against 3.2, on the figures that can be compared: a clean load result, a much faster first byte, daily backups and monitoring in the plan, and a container per site. For a WordPress site that earns, those differences show up on the pages customers use. Our page on Kinsta for WooCommerce covers two figures that describe a checkout differently.
HostGator is the cheapest three years in this series, and with backups added it is still a fifth of the Kinsta bill. Take it for a personal site or a small project, decline the pre-selected extras, and watch whether its uptime follows the hardware improvement. Our page on what web hosting costs runs both totals further.
