Bluehost vs IONOS looks like a question about price and turns out to be a question about load. IONOS Plus costs $1.00 a month for the first year, then $14.00. Bluehost Starter costs $3.99, then $9.99 on a 36-month term or $11.99 on an annual one. On annual terms the dollar keeps IONOS cheaper until month 30. Under concurrent visitors, though, the two are not close. In the same 2026 benchmarks Bluehost served the load test at 41 ms with no errors. The IONOS entry plan failed it at a 65.4% error rate. The same IONOS figures against Kinsta are in our Kinsta and IONOS comparison.
Bluehost vs IONOS: The Short Answer
Bluehost, at 4.0 against 3.1 in our reviews. It costs $143.64 across three years on its longest term, passes the load test the IONOS plan fails, and scores 9.6 of 10 on hardware against 7.2. IONOS wins on a shorter commitment and a named consultant per account.

The Dollar Plan, and When It Stops Being Cheap
IONOS Plus bills $1.00 a month for twelve months and then $14.00, which is 14.0× over 12 months. Across 36 months on annual terms that comes to $348.00. Bluehost Starter on annual terms opens at $3.99 and renews at $11.99, which comes to $335.64 over the same stretch.
So the order changes during the second year. The IONOS dollar keeps it cheaper through month 29, and from month 30 Bluehost is cheaper overall, because IONOS renews two dollars a month higher. On Bluehost’s 36-month term the question does not arise: three years cost $143.64, and the renewal only begins after that.
⚠️ IONOS describes the dollar two ways. Its cheap-hosting page shows $1.00 on a one-year term, and another of its pages describes a dollar first month. We price the one-year reading, which is the friendlier one. Bluehost pricing is also disputed: its help page gives $3.99 renewing at $9.99, while a July 2026 review quotes $1.99 renewing at $8.99. Our page on hosting renewal prices records both.

Choosing the Term Is Half the Decision
The two hosts reward different commitments. Bluehost gives its best rate for a 36-month prepayment and a worse renewal on annual terms, so the length you sign moves its three-year cost from $143.64 to $335.64. IONOS gives its dollar rate on a 12-month term, so its low price comes with a short commitment attached.
That makes the horizon the first question, before the brand. For a site you expect to run for years, the 36-month Bluehost term is the cheapest option on this page by a wide margin. For a project that may close within a year, the IONOS dollar is cheaper and the shorter lock-in is worth something on its own. Between those two, on annual terms, the totals sit close together, and the load result is what separates them.
The Load Test Decides It
We run no tests, so these figures belong to Hostingstep. Its load test ramps to 100 concurrent visitors over 60 seconds. Bluehost, rerun after its move to Oracle Cloud, answered at 41 ms with no errors. The IONOS entry plan failed with a 65.4% error rate, which the tester reads as the plan being unable to serve concurrent traffic.
The rest of the record follows the same direction. Bluehost’s cached global response is 224 ms across 40 locations against 480 ms for IONOS, and its hardware scores 9.6 of 10 against 7.2. Uptime is the one tie, at 99.99% for both in that project.
⚠️ A plan that fails at 100 visitors is fine for a site that never sees them together. A newsletter launch or a shared post is exactly that moment. Our roundup of hosting for high traffic ranks hosts by this result.

Where IONOS Has an Advantage
Commitment. The IONOS intro needs 12 months, while Bluehost’s best rate needs 36. For a project that might close inside a year, a dollar a month with a short term is the cheapest honest way to find out.
Support is the other. IONOS answers the phone and assigns a named consultant to each account, which few budget hosts match in writing. Bluehost answers phone and chat around the clock without a named contact. One review disputes how reachable the IONOS consultant is in practice, and in September 2026 United Internet announced restructuring that cuts about 800 roles across IONOS and 1&1.
Email, Limits and Everyday Use
Neither host is generous with email on the entry plan. IONOS Plus bundles one mailbox per plan. Bluehost allows more mailboxes but caps each at 100 MB, which fills quickly with attachments. A small business with several people will want a dedicated email provider at either host, and our guide to setting up email on your domain covers the records that make it work.
IONOS runs its own dashboard rather than cPanel, so moving away later means learning a different panel. Bluehost puts a WordPress dashboard in front of cPanel, and accounts export in a standard format. That is a small point on day one and a real one on the day you leave.
Refunds and Extras
Both refund within 30 days and exclude domains. Bluehost keeps $15.99 for the free domain if you cancel early. It also sells extras from its dashboard, including a premium certificate at $89.88 that most sites do not need and Yoast SEO Premium. IONOS bills extra mailboxes separately.
None of those extras are required at either host. Declining them is what keeps the totals above honest, and our page on hidden hosting fees collects the charges that arrive after checkout.
Who Owns Them
Bluehost has belonged to Newfold Digital since 2021, alongside HostGator and Yoast SEO, and who owns Bluehost traces that group. IONOS Group SE has been listed in Frankfurt since February 2023, and United Internet holds about 64%, which also owns 1&1, STRATO, GMX and WEB.DE.
A listed company publishes its accounts, which a private group never has to do. It also answers to shareholders on costs, which is the context for September’s restructuring. Neither ownership is a verdict on service quality.
Which Result Matters for Your Site
Uptime is the tie here, and for a quiet site it is the number that matters most. A brochure site with a handful of visitors an hour will rarely meet a hundred at once, and at 99.99% both hosts stayed up across the monitored window.
The load result matters the moment traffic arrives in bursts: a newsletter, a sale, a post that gets shared. That is when a plan that fails at 100 concurrent visitors starts returning errors to real people, and those errors land on the busiest page at the most valuable moment. If your site has any such moment planned, the load test is the line to read, and it points one way.
Hardware sits between the two. A score of 9.6 against 7.2 matters for uncached work: admin pages, search and anything a plugin builds on each visit. A cached blog feels it less. Our guide to reducing TTFB explains how caching changes what the server has to do.
Where Each One Is Weakest
IONOS is weakest under load and at renewal. A 65.4% error rate on the entry plan is a real limit, and a step from $1.00 to $14.00 after one year is the steepest multiplier in this comparison. Its support promise also sits beside a restructuring that cuts staff, which is worth weighing if the named consultant is why you are buying.
Bluehost is weakest on commitment and after checkout. Its best rate needs three years in advance, the dashboard sells add-ons most sites never need, and it keeps part of a refund for the free domain. None of that affects how the site performs. All of it affects what you pay and how easily you leave.
Winners by Category
Three years, longest terms: Bluehost, at $143.64 against $348.00. Three years, annual terms: Bluehost, narrowly, at $335.64. First two years: IONOS, on the dollar rate. Load handling: Bluehost, which passed the test IONOS failed. Hardware: Bluehost, at 9.6 against 7.2. Uptime: a tie at 99.99%. Commitment: IONOS, at 12 months. Named contact: IONOS.
When to Choose IONOS Instead
Take IONOS if the site is a trial with a short horizon. A dollar a month for a year, a short term and 30 days to ask for a refund make it a cheap way to test an idea. A named consultant also suits an owner who will not debug anything personally. Our comparison of SiteGround against IONOS sets it against another premium rival.
Take Bluehost for anything meant to last or to get busy. It is cheaper across three years on either term, it handled the load test cleanly, and its hardware is among the strongest on shared hosting. Our comparison of Bluehost against Namecheap weighs it against a cheaper renewal.

How We Research
We run no tests. Load, response, hardware and uptime figures come from Hostingstep’s 2026 benchmarks with their windows. Prices come from the providers’ own pages, read on 20 September 2026, and the crossover month comes from month-by-month arithmetic on the published rates.
Ownership comes from IONOS Group’s investor relations pages and reporting on the September restructuring. The criteria behind our scores are on our about page, and the full workings are in our Bluehost review.
Bluehost vs IONOS FAQ
Over three years, Bluehost: $143.64 on its 36-month term against $348.00 at IONOS on annual terms. Even on annual terms Bluehost comes to $335.64. IONOS is cheaper only through month 29 of an annual comparison, thanks to its dollar first year.
Because it measures concurrent visitors, not one at a time. In the 2026 benchmarks the IONOS entry plan failed with a 65.4% error rate, while Bluehost answered at 41 ms with no errors. A newsletter or a shared post creates exactly that load.
Its cheap-hosting page shows $1.00 a month on a one-year term, and another IONOS page describes a dollar first month. We price the one-year reading. Check the cart before paying, because the shorter reading makes three years dearer.
IONOS offers a phone line and a named consultant per account; Bluehost offers phone and chat around the clock. One review disputes the consultant’s reachability, and United Internet announced about 800 role cuts across IONOS and 1&1 in September 2026.
Bluehost belongs to Newfold Digital, which also owns HostGator and Yoast SEO. IONOS Group SE is listed in Frankfurt, and United Internet holds about 64%. United Internet also owns 1&1, STRATO, GMX and WEB.DE.
The Verdict
Bluehost takes this clearly, at 4.0 against 3.1. It costs less across three years on either term, passed a load test the IONOS entry plan failed, and scores higher on hardware. The one tie is uptime, and it does not change the order.
IONOS has a real use: a short, cheap trial with a named person to call. Just read the dollar as a discount on one year rather than on the stay. And do not put a site that will get busy on a plan that fails at 100 visitors. If you are moving either way, our guide to migrating web hosting covers the order.
