SiteGround vs IONOS looks settled before you start. One host asks $2.99 a month and the other asks $1.00. Then the first year ends. IONOS Plus renews at $14.00 a month, which is 14.0× over 12 months. SiteGround StartUp renews at $14.99 on a 24-month term, which is 5.0× over 24 months. Run both to 36 months and the dollar plan comes out $348.00 against $251.64. So the cheaper entry is the more expensive purchase, and the reason is arithmetic rather than opinion. The same IONOS figures set against Newfold Digital’s Bluehost are in our Bluehost and IONOS comparison.
SiteGround vs IONOS: The Short Answer
SiteGround, on a 24-month term. Three years cost $251.64 against $348.00, its server benchmark scores higher, and its entry plan survives a load test that the IONOS one fails. IONOS wins on uptime and on commitment length, since it asks for 12 months rather than 24. The same IONOS figures against a Cloudways server are in our Cloudways and IONOS comparison.

The Dollar Plan Is the Expensive One
IONOS bills Plus at $1.00 a month for the first year, then $14.00. Twelve months at a dollar and twenty-four at fourteen come to $348.00 across three years. SiteGround bills StartUp at $2.99 for twenty-four months and then $14.99, which comes to $251.64. The host with the louder discount ends up charging more.
The mechanism is the length of the discount rather than its size. IONOS discounts hard and briefly. SiteGround discounts modestly and for twice as long. Its promotional rate covers twenty-four of the thirty-six months. Our page on hosting renewal prices tracks both figures for the whole field, and what web hosting costs runs the same arithmetic across every plan we have priced out.
⚠️ One caveat belongs here. IONOS pages describe the dollar rate in two ways: its cheap-hosting page shows $1.00 a month on a one-year term, while another page describes a dollar first month. We price the one-year reading, which is the friendlier of the two. If the dollar covers a single month instead, the three-year total climbs further and the gap widens.

Where IONOS Has a Real Advantage
Commitment. The IONOS intro rate needs a 12-month term, and the SiteGround rate that produces $251.64 needs 24. So IONOS asks for half the lock-in, and that matters if the site might not exist in two years. Stay on annual terms at SiteGround and its renewal moves to $17.99, which pushes the three-year total to $467.64. The same IONOS figures against Kinsta are in our Kinsta and IONOS comparison.
That is the honest shape of this comparison. SiteGround is cheaper only if you accept the longer term. Namecheap beats both on this measure, and we put the numbers side by side in SiteGround against Namecheap.

Speed
We run no tests, so these figures belong to Hostingstep, which monitors both hosts on purchased accounts. IONOS records a global time to first byte of 480 ms against 632 ms at SiteGround, so the budget host answers faster in the ordinary case. Neither number is quick by the standards of the top of that field, where the leaders sit near 340 ms.
The picture reverses under pressure. In the same 2026 benchmarks the IONOS entry plan failed the load test with a 65.4% error rate, which the tester reads as the plan being unable to serve concurrent traffic. SiteGround handled the same test at 170 ms with no errors. A site that gets a spike of visitors is the case that separates them, and a slow first byte is easier to fix than a failure to answer at all. Our guide to speeding up a slow website covers the first half of that problem.
Uptime
IONOS records 99.99% in the same monitoring and SiteGround 99.96%. On its own that favors IONOS. Still, the SiteGround figure carries detail worth reading: 193 minutes of downtime across 2025, spread over 44 separate outages, against 18 outages in 2024. The percentage held while the failures multiplied.
Both hosts publish an uptime guarantee, and neither guarantee is the measurement. IONOS states 99.99% as a commitment, which is a promise rather than a record. We use the monitored figures instead, and we name the window each one covers.
Support
This is the one criterion where IONOS outbids a premium host. It answers the phone on every plan and assigns a named consultant to an account, which no budget competitor matches in writing. SiteGround also publishes a phone number, alongside chat and tickets around the clock.
⚠️ Two things temper that. One published review disputes whether the named consultant is reachable in practice, and in September 2026 United Internet announced restructuring at IONOS and 1&1 that cuts about 800 roles across the two companies. Neither fact measures response time, because no controlled test of hosting support exists in the sources we found. Both belong in front of a buyer choosing IONOS for its support.
Ease of Use and What Is Bundled
Neither host runs cPanel. SiteGround built Site Tools, IONOS built its own dashboard, and anyone arriving from a cPanel host has something to relearn either way. The difference is depth. SiteGround adds staging from the GrowBig tier upward, along with daily backups and a content network on every plan.
IONOS bundles one email account per plan, which its plan pages state plainly. That is a small number for a business that wants an address for each person, and the extra mailboxes are billed separately. Published limits like that one are worth more than they look, because most of this category prefers the word unlimited to a figure, which is the subject of our piece on what unlimited hosting means.
For a first-time owner the practical difference is the phone. IONOS answers it and assigns a name to the account, and SiteGround answers it as well. Between two dashboards that both need learning, a voice on the line is worth more than a menu layout.
Who Owns Them
IONOS is the listed company here. IONOS Group SE floated in Frankfurt in February 2023, and before the offering United Internet held 75.1% with Warburg Pincus on 24.9%. United Internet still holds about 64%, and the company’s own investor page puts the free float at 36.2% as of 30 June 2026. United Internet also owns 1&1, STRATO, GMX and WEB.DE.
SiteGround Hosting Ltd has stayed private since it was founded in Sofia in 2004, and no outside group appears in its ownership. So the choice here is between a founder-run company and a subsidiary answering to a listed parent and its shareholders. Newfold Digital is the version of that arrangement we have written about most, in who owns Bluehost.
Ownership is not a verdict, and a listed parent brings published accounts that a private company never has to file. It does decide where pricing and staffing get settled, which is the September announcement in a sentence.

When to Choose IONOS Instead
Take IONOS if the site is a trial. A dollar a month for a year, a 12-month term and a refund window of 30 days make it the cheapest honest way to find out whether a project has legs. Take it too if a phone number and a named contact matter more than benchmark scores, which is a reasonable position for a business owner who is not going to debug anything personally. Our roundup of cheap web hosting places it against the rest of that tier.
Take SiteGround if the site is meant to last and might get busy. It costs less across three years on a 24-month term, its hardware scores higher, and it answered the load test that the IONOS entry plan did not. For a WordPress build in particular, our list of the best WordPress hosting explains where each one fits.

How We Research
We run no speed or uptime tests, so every measurement above is attributed to Hostingstep with the window it covers. Prices come from the providers’ own pages, read on 20 September 2026, and the SiteGround renewal figures follow its own renewal table as reported in August 2026. Ownership comes from IONOS Group’s investor relations pages and from the 2023 offering announcement. Where a host’s own pages describe an offer two ways, as IONOS does with the dollar rate, we say so and price the friendlier reading.
The long versions sit in our SiteGround review and our IONOS review. Each figure there carries the source it came from, and both pages get corrected when a price moves.
The criteria behind both scores are on our about page. Charges that arrive after the first term, which neither total above includes, are collected in hidden hosting fees.
SiteGround vs IONOS FAQ
SiteGround, at $251.64 against $348.00, provided you take its 24-month term. IONOS charges $1.00 a month for twelve months and then $14.00, so its discount ends two years earlier. On annual SiteGround terms the comparison flips, because the total reaches $467.64.
Its cheap-hosting page shows $1.00 a month on a one-year term, and another IONOS page describes a dollar first month. We price the one-year reading. If the shorter one applies to your cart, the three-year total rises and the gap with SiteGround grows.
IONOS, on ordinary requests. Hostingstep records a global time to first byte of 480 ms against 632 ms at SiteGround. Under concurrent load the order reverses: the IONOS entry plan failed that test with a 65.4% error rate, while SiteGround answered at 170 ms with none.
IONOS Group SE is listed in Frankfurt and United Internet holds about 64%. Warburg Pincus took 24.9% before the 2023 offering, and the free float stood at 36.2% on 30 June 2026. United Internet also owns 1&1, STRATO, GMX and WEB.DE.
IONOS needs 12 months for its intro rate. SiteGround needs 24 months for the renewal that makes it cheaper over three years, and an annual term there renews at $17.99 instead of $14.99. Both refund within 30 days, and domains are excluded from that.
The Verdict
SiteGround takes this, and the dollar is the reason it needs explaining. Three years cost $251.64 against $348.00 on the terms each host prices best, the hardware score runs 8.4 against 7.2, and the entry plan answered a load test that its rival failed. Our scores read 3.9 against 3.1, which is a wider gap than we usually publish between two working hosts.
IONOS still has the better opening offer, and for a project that might close inside a year that is the right trade. Just do not read the dollar as a discount on the whole stay, because it is a discount on one twelfth of it. If you are already on one of them and moving, our guide to migrating web hosting covers the order of operations.
