Cloudways for Drupal (2026): The Shell Settles It

Disclosure: WebFin is reader-supported. If you buy hosting through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions vary between providers and our ratings do not — here’s our full disclosure.

On our three shared-hosting Drupal pages the deciding question was always the same: does your tier include a shell, because Composer needs one. Here it does, on every plan, and that settles the condition our pages on Bluehost, SiteGround and Hostinger had to leave open. What replaces it is a sizing question, and it lands on the editorial half of a Drupal site rather than the visitor half.

Is Cloudways Right for Drupal? The Short Answer

Yes, and the shell is the reason. Composer, Git and staging are on every tier from $14.00 a month, billed hourly, which makes module and core updates routine instead of awkward. Size above the entry configuration if the site has editors, and add a content network yourself, because none is bundled here.

Requirement Against Provision

Composer from a shell. Included on every tier. This is the whole reason a server suits Drupal better than a cheap shared plan.

PHP memory in the hundreds of megabytes. Yours to set, and module installs are the step that fails when it is too low.

Cron on your own schedule. Search indexing and queue work depend on it.

A search service, if you scale search. Drupal runs without Solr or OpenSearch, and adding one is a server decision. Our tables do not record whether either is provided here, so ask in writing if that is part of your plan.

Drupal requirements mapped onto a managed server

Which Half the Entry Figure Hits

Drupal caches anonymous pages itself, so visitors are largely insulated from server size. The administrative interface is not: every save, preview and media upload reaches the server, and editors do it simultaneously.

The benchmark figure in our tables belongs to the entry Vultr High Frequency configuration. It recorded 288 ms under load with a 1.7% error rate, and a WordPress score of 7.6 of 10. For a brochure site with two editors that is immaterial. For a newsroom it is the working day.

⚠️ So size the server against your editorial peak rather than your traffic peak. That is the opposite of the advice a store gets. Our page on Cloudways for WooCommerce shows the same trade from the other direction.

Why server size affects Drupal editors more than Drupal visitors

The One Thing Missing Here

No bundled content network. Drupal’s cached pages are exactly what an edge network copies well, and hosts like Kinsta and Rocket.net include one while Cloudways does not.

That is a cost rather than a fault. Add your own and set the bypass rules, which our guide to setting up a CDN covers.

Our page on content delivery networks covers choosing one without a vendor ranking.

What the Tooling Buys a Drupal Team

Staging on every tier. Composer updates belong on a copy, and this is the plan feature that makes that habit cheap: our guide to setting up a staging site covers the workflow.

Git deployment. Which turns a Drupal release into a repeatable step rather than a file upload, as our list of hosting for developers covers.

PHP version selection. A major Drupal upgrade normally wants a newer PHP, and switching per application rather than per account is the useful shape.

Hourly billing. A second server for a migration rehearsal costs the hours it runs.

What to Watch

No email. Mailboxes are elsewhere, which matters for an institution sending notifications from the site.

Phone support costs extra. Chat and tickets are included around the clock; a phone line is a paid add-on.

Managed stops at the server. Drupal updates, module compatibility and database tuning stay yours, which our page on managed against unmanaged hosting works through.

Sizing has no warning light. Nothing in the panel says the server is small for the number of editors you added.

The per-unit alternative with root: $36.00 a year per processor core and $12.00 per gigabyte of memory, adjustable at any time.

Against the Alternatives

Shared hosting with a confirmed shell. Cheaper, and adequate for an institutional site with a handful of editors. Bluehost, a Newfold Digital brand, publishes both halves of the workload and runs cPanel.

Scala Hosting’s VPS. Root access priced per unit, which is cheaper for a known workload and hands you more of the administration.

Managed WordPress platforms. Not applicable: they host WordPress only, so a Drupal site is outside their scope entirely.

Which Drupal Sites Fit

A site with a real editorial team. Provided you size for them, this is the best fit in the series.

A multisite network. One server, several sites, no per-site pricing.

A site with a developer and a release process. Git and staging make that normal.

A publication. With a content network added, and our list of hosting for news sites covers the rest of that case.

Checklist for running Drupal on a managed server

The First Month

Count your editors, then size. Concurrent saves and uploads, not monthly visitors.

Turn on Drupal’s own caching. Before judging any figure, which our guide to configuring caching puts in order.

Add a network if readers are distant. Nothing is bundled here.

Rehearse a Composer update on staging. Once, so the team knows the steps before an urgent security release.

How We Research

We run no tests. The load result, WordPress score and uptime range come from Hostingstep. The load and score are from its Cloudways review of 2026, with the uptime range of 99.996% to 99.999% across five plans from its October 2025 to May 2026 window.

Prices, billing terms, inclusions and support channels come from Cloudways’ own pages, read on 20 September 2026, and sit in our tables. Drupal’s requirements come from its own documentation for current releases, and module behavior is outside what we review. Our tables do not record search-service availability here, and we say so rather than assume. The criteria are on our about page, and the full workings are in our Cloudways review.

Cloudways for Drupal FAQ

Why is Cloudways a good fit for Drupal?

Because Composer needs a shell, and here it is on every tier along with Git and staging. On the shared plans we price, shell availability was the question you had to ask support before buying.

Does server size matter for Drupal visitors?

Less than you would expect. Drupal caches anonymous pages itself, so size shows up in the administrative interface instead, where saves, previews and uploads reach the server every time.

Should I buy the entry configuration?

Not with a real editorial team. The entry Vultr High Frequency plan recorded 288 ms under load with a 1.7% error rate on a lighter test, and hourly billing makes trying a larger size cheap.

Is a content network included?

No. Kinsta and Rocket.net bundle Cloudflare Enterprise; Cloudways does not, so add your own if readers are spread across countries. Drupal’s cached pages copy to an edge network well.

What about Solr for search?

Drupal runs without it, and adding one is a server decision. Our tables do not record whether Solr or OpenSearch is provided here, so ask in writing if scaled search is part of the plan.

The Verdict

For Drupal this is the cleanest answer in the series, because it removes the question the shared pages had to leave open. Composer, Git and staging on every tier make the maintenance story normal, and hourly billing makes rehearsals cheap.

The two things to do yourself are size for your editors rather than your visitors, and add a content network if the audience is international. Keep in mind that managed covers the server while Drupal stays yours. Our page on what web hosting costs prices three years of each option.
