SiteGround vs WP Engine (2026): The Ladder Crosses

SiteGround GoGeek renews at $44.99 a month. WP Engine Startup renews at $35.00. The same WP Engine figures set against Newfold Digital’s Bluehost are in our Bluehost and WP Engine comparison.

So the top shared tier costs more per month than the entry managed plan. Across three years it costs $11.64 more in total.

Where the Ladder Crosses

SiteGround sells three shared tiers, and StartUp on two terms. That gives four totals across three years.

StartUp on its 24-month term reaches $251.64. On the 12-month term it reaches $467.64. GrowBig reaches $779.64 and GoGeek $1,175.64.

WP Engine Startup reaches $1,164.00. That places it between GrowBig and GoGeek, and below the shared tier above it. The same WP Engine figures against a Cloudways server are in our Cloudways and WP Engine comparison.

Therefore the question is not whether managed hosting costs more. It is which shared tier you were going to buy — every renewal sits here with its term.

Table of five three-year totals showing where the managed plan sits among shared tiers

The Short Answer

SiteGround on StartUp, WP Engine above GrowBig. The crossover sits between those two tiers.

Below it, shared hosting is far cheaper. Above it, the managed plan costs less and has been measured.

The Multiplier Explains the Crossing

SiteGround multiplies every shared tier by around six after twelve months. GoGeek goes from $7.99 to $44.99.

WP Engine multiplies by 1.3, from $27.00 to $35.00. It starts high and barely moves.

So a plan that looks nine times cheaper in month one is dearer by month thirteen. That pattern decides most of our comparisons.

What each host charges once the introductory term ends, with the term the multiplier is calculated over — a 6× increase over 12 months and a 2.5× increase over 36 months are not comparable. Bluehost figures read from its own help page; the rest from agreeing independent sources pending a first-party check. Checked 31 August 2026.

Read the third column rather than the second. A six times rise after twelve months is a different product from a 1.3 times rise after twelve months.

What Our Tables Hold, Again

This is the third comparison in a row where one column is empty. We score SiteGround 3.9 and WP Engine 4.1.

WP Engine records 65 milliseconds globally, first of 34 hosts, across 40 test locations. It also records 355 milliseconds across 349,920 checks in a separate window.

No response time or uptime figure for SiteGround appears anywhere in our tables. That is a gap in our research rather than a fault of the host.

We said the same thing comparing it with GoDaddy and with HostGator. Three times is a pattern we intend to close. HostGator belongs to Newfold Digital.

Two panels showing which measurements our tables hold for each host

Where WP Engine Is Not Ahead

Uptime. A study of fourteen managed hosts placed it tenth at 99.976 percent, while ranking it first on response time in the same window. The same WP Engine figures against Kinsta are in our Kinsta and WP Engine comparison.

The visit ceiling. Its entry tier allows 25,000 monthly visits, rising to 400,000 across the range. Traffic above the allowance triggers overage handling.

Email. It does not sell email hosting at any price. For a small business that means a second provider and a second bill.

Fast and merely average on uptime is a coherent profile, and we set out the same split elsewhere.

$1,164.00 over three years, and 25,000 monthly visits on the entry tier

Ownership, Where Only One Is Documented

Silver Lake took a majority stake in WP Engine in 2018, reported at about $250 million. That is in our Who Owns What table.

SiteGround has no row there. We could not establish its ownership from the sources we read, which is the same wall we hit elsewhere.

Neither structure should decide a purchase. Both should be knowable before one is made.

Four Points That Decide It

Which SiteGround tier you were buying. StartUp costs $251.64 across three years and GoGeek $1,175.64, for the same three years.

Whether you need email. WP Engine does not offer it, and that single line moves more decisions than any speed figure.

Your monthly visit count. The WP Engine entry tier stops at 25,000, and a stated ceiling beats an unstated one.

Whether a benchmark ranking matters to you. One host appears in ours and the other does not.

How We Research

Every figure here comes from our own tables, each row naming the source that published it, checked on 12 September 2026. Four totals are arithmetic on those rows: $467.64 is 12 at $2.99 then 24 at $17.99, $779.64 is 12 at $4.99 then 24 at $29.99, $1,175.64 is 12 at $7.99 then 24 at $44.99, and $11.64 is the gap to $1,164.00.

Where a table holds no row for a host, we say so rather than filling the gap. We run no tests of our own. Our criteria are on our About page.

SiteGround vs WP Engine FAQ

Which is cheaper, SiteGround or WP Engine?

It depends on the tier. SiteGround StartUp on its 24-month term costs $251.64 across three years. GoGeek costs $1,175.64, which is $11.64 more than WP Engine Startup at $1,164.00.

Why does a shared plan cost more than a managed one?

Because of the multiplier. SiteGround raises GoGeek from $7.99 to $44.99 after twelve months. WP Engine raises Startup from $27.00 to $35.00, a rise of 1.3 times.

Which is faster?

WP Engine, by the only figures we hold. It records 65 milliseconds globally and ranks first of 34 hosts across 40 test locations. No response time for SiteGround appears in our tables.

Does WP Engine have any weak points?

Three. A study of fourteen managed hosts placed it tenth on uptime at 99.976 percent, its entry tier caps at 25,000 monthly visits, and it does not sell email hosting at any price.

Who owns each company?

Silver Lake took a majority stake in WP Engine in 2018, reported at about $250 million. We could not establish SiteGround’s ownership from the sources we read.

The Verdict

SiteGround if you were buying StartUp. WP Engine if you were buying GoGeek. The ladder crosses between GrowBig and the top tier.

In short, managed hosting is not automatically the expensive choice. It becomes the cheaper one as soon as a shared renewal passes $35.00 a month, which happens at one SiteGround tier.

Only GoGeek renews above that figure, at $44.99. GrowBig stops at $29.99.
